  • COURSE SUMMARY

    This course will offer an overview of Canadian History from 1815 to 1914. The course will delve into four major themes:

    1. Identity, Society and Culture
    2. Governance
    3. Economy and Technology
    4. Environment

    Learners will be invited to consider questions like:

    - Who were the early Canadians and how do we know of them?
    - How does geography affect human activity on all levels: political, economic, social and cultural?
    - What developed in the young, emerging Canada as a system of governance and who challenged this?
    - What is the emerging story of BC in Canada during this time?

    Learners will examine the Charter of Rights, consider Native Canadian points of view regarding historic and current Native issues, and investigate relationships between Francophone Quebec and Anglophone Canadians. Learners will also examine the Canadian parliamentary system, gaining both a historical and contemporary perspective.

    From there the course looks at Canada's crucial role in helping create international peace-keeping institutions never before seen on the world stage, domestic changes to Canada due to increased immigration, and finally, Canada's involvement in modern conflicts as well as international accords.
