    The History of Art introduces Western art throughout human history.

    Art is explored as an expression of how we observe and experience the world. It makes visible what mattered to people of different ages. It shows us when religion, love, poetry, music, or the material outer world was of the greatest importance for the people of the age in which it was produced. The learner will be asked to create pieces of artwork in the style and tradition of different time periods.

    In the History of Music learners will have the opportunity to explore, experience and respond to a variety of musical expressions from the Western world. They will become familiar with the basic elements and principles of music and the cultural and historical contexts that shape them. Attention is given to both sacred and secular music, and learners will explore instruments throughout history.

    Welcome to Fine Arts 12 : The History of Architecture.

    Architecture can be seen as an external expression of humankind’s relationship between themselves and their outer environment. It is informed by a myriad of things, each of which will be considered in this course: geography, weather, culture, and socio/economic/political contexts and influences. Learners will learn the fundamental elements of space, material, techniques, and forms central to architecture. Starting with ancient civilizations, this course will trace the development of architecture through time.

  • Visual Arts - Mixed Media (VAM 10)

    Mixed Media offers you a chance to explore a variety of two-dimensional art making media. While experimenting with a variety of techniques, you will share and discuss your work with your mentor and find new ways to express your ideas. Pen & ink, pastels, collage, painting and more will all be touched upon.

    Upon completion of this course, learners will:
    • be familiar with some movements and artists who use the street as support for their art.
    • be familiar with some terminology relating to graffiti and street art techniques and movements.
    • be able to create art using graffiti and street art techniques: stickers, stencils, lambe-lambe/wheatpastes, posters, graffiti, murals, amongst others)
    • •be familiar with diverse perspectives on community public art in and the role that art
      plays in our lives, in our communities and in the world.
    • produce a body of work in their own style with their own messages, and use the street as a support for some of this work.


  • <!--[endif]--><!--[if !vml]--><!--[endif]-->DRRRAAAAWWWWW IT OUT!!! Join us as we explore the basics of drawing with the use of art games, co-operative art making, blind contour drawing, distorted grid drawing, etc etc etc – all with the purpose of getting to know ourselves better. Prepare to stare into the depths of your person as we explore the genre of self portraits. We will take the time to view various artist work, both historical and contemporary.

  • A SUMMER INTENSIVE FOR YOUTH, AGES 15-18, WHO ARE PASSIONATE ABOUT THE VISUAL ARTS.

    The Summer Visual Arts Intensives runs from July 5-31.

    Gain high school credit in a collaborative, dynamic, hands-on, and professional studio environment. Instructional workshops are co-lead by experienced & dedicated mentors/artists and will cover the following:

    Drawing, Sketchbook, Art History, Printmaking, Found Sculpture, Collaborative Art Making, gallery Visits, portfolio Development, Studio/Residency, Group & Individual Critique, Student Art exhibition.

    Location: SelfDesign High & Oxygen Art Centre, Nelson, BC

    Fees: $90 (includes shared material costs – students are encouraged to bring their own materials, as well)
