PeaceCamps 2010

SelfDesign & Columbia Basin Trust

presents PeaceCamps 2010

PeaceCamps 2

SelfDesign High announces the second year of PeaceCamps! Held at Tipi Camp on Kootenay Lake, PeaceCamp is a place for all young people to have a unique summer experience focused on building their self, community and global awareness. Last year was a fantastic success and we were able to dive deep into meaningful issues around peace and conflict in the world. PeaceCamp is for and run by youth. As a result, an atmosphere is created where the innate wisdom of youth shines through.

The first camp, for 9 -13 year old youth will be held from July 26th -29th. The second camp, for 14 – 19 year old youth is from August 30th-September 2nd. Both camps focus on peaceful skill building through non-violent communication, music and theatre, stories, stillness, and an appreciation for the natural environment. The young adult camp also focuses on our local cultural heritage. Both camps are planned and facilitated by 3 local youth leaders working alongside adult mentors at SelfDesign High.

Space is limited. Please register by Aug 16th!

SelfDesign High Announces Gateways Program & 2 New Courses!

New! Gateways is a pilot initiative of SelfDesign to invite young people aged 13 and 14 to move more deeply in to their own personal ‘selfdesigning’ while learning together with others who share their interests and passions.  We feel this approach will support learners as they move towards more independence in their learning, something that they can fully pursue as they turn 15 and  move into SelfDesign High.

In the Gateways program, learners will create both an individual learning plan for the year and will work with a group of other learners to identify activities and projects to do together.  A Gateways LC and/or Mentor(s) will provide team support for the group, for both individual learner’s plans and group project plans.  The group learning will influence and support the individual learning plan.

Visit selfdesignhigh.org for further details and FAQ’s on Gateways!

New Math Courses

This coming September the grade 10 math courses change here in BC. So, with that in mind we’ve been having some long conversations about exactly how we’re going to present the 2 new grade 10 courses, Apprenticeship & Workplace Math, and  Foundation & Pre-Calc Math. As an online high school it is easier for us to think outisde the box in the presentation of our courses and make something that is truly different and inspiring. A lot of our thinking can be seen in the video below. Our new courses will be based along these ideas and we have some new and interesting ideas of our own as well. Watch this space for more information about our new online Apprenticeship & Workplace Math, and  Foundation & Pre-Calc Math courses.
