Making Good Impressions

A SDH Fine Art Gr 11 (4 credits) Workshop course in Kelowna with Community Mentor, Heather Parlane

Feb 6th-March 7th (Spring Break), resuming March 26th-April 4th

This Fine Art/Studio course taps into the vivacious art of the Impressionists, as well as the historical and cultural mood of Paris in the 19th century.

It will enable students to explore a variety of art techniques, and develop design and technical skills while producing significant projects, as well as a body of sketches.

Art Appreciation: Specific work of the Impressionists will be studied, as well as the artists’ lives. Lessons will include an overview of the time, introduction to individual artists and an appreciation for their works, as well as include short slide shows and DVD segments. Discussion will be encouraged each day with reference to students own projects and art techniques.

Elements and principles of design: Light and colour will be the main emphasis as it relates to the movement. Projects will revolve around the experimentation with light and colour theory. Still life and figure drawing will be emphasized. Timeline and map: A timeline, map, as well as historical visual references, will be developed over the duration of the course.

Portfolio/ sketches: As ongoing homework, students will be expected to develop a portfolio of sketches.

Essay: An essay of 500 words on a related topic will be due toward the completion of the course. Students will also be expected to compile a creative visual package of their course work to send to their mentor at SDH.

Art Show: On the final day of class students will put on a student-run art show for parents and friends.

This 7-week course includes:

42 hours of supervised instruction totalling 100 hours with assignments and projects.

10:00am-1:00 pm Mondays and Wednesdays

Feb 6th-March 7th (Spring Break), resuming March 26th-April 4th

Additional supply fee $40.00

As part of the theme block, "Imagine, Think and Do," EOS learners painted this mural collaboratively right next door to the BackAlley Studio. Imagining the wall was initiated by the whole group and the theme was worked over in conversation with the owner of the building. Learners approached the wall with their individual sketches and worked to create a unified context within the theme of 'skiing in the winter.'

Gap Theatre Workshops at SDH starting January!

This course, facilitated by the West Kootenay Women's Association, will consist of a ten-week series of workshops based on Theatre of the Oppressed, a form of popular theatre that has grown into a global movement since it's development in Brazil in the 1960's. It uses a set of games, exercises and practices that create space for people to name their reality, identify the contradictions, dialogue through theatre, and try out different solutions. It uses movement, storytelling and tableaux to explore how images of one’s personal experience reflect universal issues of power and social transformation. The final result is short scenes that are collectively created by drawing on participants’ life experience in order to engage in discussion of issues.

At the end of the workshops, participants will have the option of performing the scenes we create for the community, and performers will receive a $100 honorarium. All participants get high school drama credits through SelfDesign High.

We do stuff, create things and go places to explore, confront and ignite conversations about Peace and how to live in ways that ground Peace in the world.

In the past years we have followed our passion for peace to Los Angeles for an International PeaceJam to Trento, Italy for a Peace and Social Justice Exchange to the Tipi Camp, held on the east shore of Kootenay Lake, BC for our PeaceCamps and this week (Monday Nov 8-10th) we’ll be in San Francisco for The Global Summit to offer our Passion Banner Project and a LifeSpiral experience.

We are being the change we want to see in the world.

Acting & Drama at SDH with Lucas Myers

Creation and Collaboration:

The Actor as Creator

This workshop will focus on the performer as a creator, with students creating a devised work at the end of each term. The first term will focus on a collaborative performance based on a specific social issue. The second term will conclude with a roving, site specific performance in which the audience will move through downtown Nelson and encounter performers as they travel. Throughout the year, each class will include exercises to promote physical awareness and cultivate connectivity between performers onstage, leading to a more present and available performance style. Focus will be placed on working as an ensemble, both in devising material and in performance. This will empower students to have a clarified presence on stage and to feel confident about discovering their artistic voice. There will also be a yearlong Shakespeare Monologue study and audition training, as well as solo projects and character studies.

Creative Collaboration Drama 10

Introduction to techniques used in a collaborative process including generating material and focussing ideas. Students will also start to work on intuitive performance, with exercises that promote being in the moment on stage and following impulses.

Creative Collaboration Drama 11

Focus will be placed on working collectively to create a production, choosing a theme and creating material based on the theme. Play building, monologues and implementing various methods of expression including song, puppetry, and video will be explored.

Creative Collaboration Drama 12

The students will create a production based on a theme and implementing a variety of dramatic tools. Exercises will focus on stage awareness and self expression as well as building character and finding a unique “voice”. All aspects of the production will be created by the students.

SelfDesign High Announces Gateways Program & 2 New Courses!

New! Gateways is a pilot initiative of SelfDesign to invite young people aged 13 and 14 to move more deeply in to their own personal ‘selfdesigning’ while learning together with others who share their interests and passions. We feel this approach will support learners as they move towards more independence in their learning, something that they can fully pursue as they turn 15 and move into SelfDesign High.

In the Gateways program, learners will create both an individual learning plan for the year and will work with a group of other learners to identify activities and projects to do together. A Gateways LC and/or Mentor(s) will provide team support for the group, for both individual learner’s plans and group project plans. The group learning will inﬂuence and support the individual learning plan.

Creative Youth Entrepreneurship 11

You may have heard that SelfDesign High has developed, in partnership with Nelson based Centre for Innovative and Entrepreneurial Leadership (CIEL), a unique Creative Youth Entrepreneurship course being offered at the grade 11 level. As the world rapidly changes, creative-entrepreneurial skills serving business and social goals are increasingly recognized as vital and even essential to individual success and contributing to the well-being of our communities. This course is focused on equipping youth with the tools to better understand and experience business and social-oriented entrepreneurism. So learners, let your mind wander… what business would you start doing the very thing you love?

Media Savvy 11

The faces of media are manifold and complex. What began as a very fundamental, human need to communicate for survival has evolved into a multifaceted and powerful image-saturated world of social media, billboards, marketing strategies and new technologies which, some say, determine our needs. It’s a world packed with communications competing for our attention.

All of this begs some important questions: How and when are new medias empowering, and for whom and at what cost? How do we decode and navigate this cluttered world so that the variety of technology can be harnessed in ways to positively effect the unfolding human story? At such an epoch of media-frenzy and acceleration, it is important to take time to reflect on the influences these media have on our understanding of who we are, what our relationship to each other is (family to global) and how we communicate what. Understanding the values and agenda behind the use of and rapid changes in technology and what is being aggressively promoted to youth is vital and empowering.

The goal of Media Savvy is for youth to develop the critical tools and confidence to deepen this understanding and so enable initiatives and proactive responses to a media-dense world seeking their buy-in. Equally important as unpacking how we are influenced media, learners will actually develop their skills and create their own media. So join us for a hands-on, creative and dynamic course!

Clay Intensive at eARTh Studios

Clay Intensive at eARTh Studios

Students Grade 10-12, Minimum 6 participants
Thurs August 26th to Sat Sept 4th 10am-4pm

This course is designed for the student who is interested in everything from forming to finishing pottery in a working studio in Uphill Nelson. Handbuilt and wheel basic skills will be introduced. Individual initiative and creativity is actively promoted and developed over the course of this clay intensive. A special guest will be invited to teach screen printing on clay at the end of the course as a decorating option. Use of stains, scraffito, and glaze will be discussed and exemplified. Students will be asked to pay a $45 material and supply fee and will be taking home fine examples of pottery techniques. High School elective 4 credit swill be given to students who complete the course.

Diane Walters MA is a teacher who has worked with pottery for over 30 years and brings great enthusiasm for working with youth.
