Digital Film Camp for HIgh School Students aged 14-18

July 5-16, 2010

You are eligible to earn four high school credits if you are a Grade 10, 11, or 12 student who resides in BC.

During the first week of this hands-on program participants pitch, script, direct, and produce their own short films using professional camera and sound gear. Once production is complete, the focus turns to editing, where participants learn advanced editing techniques using Final Cut Pro and create an original soundtrack using Soundtrack Pro. A short internship is made available during the second week for participants who would like to work alongside a professional filmmaker to gain experience on the set or in the field. An emphasis on collaboration, responsibility and critical thinking run through all aspects of this intensive two week program. Participants do not need any gear or equipment to participate.

The course runs Monday to Friday, 9AM-3PM at Selkirk College’s Fairview Campus.

Fees and Registration Information

The fee is $350 for both weeks of the program if the participant is entering Grade 10, 11 and 12 in the fall and currently resides in BC. For participants who are not eligible for the high school credit, the fee is $550-750 sliding scale.

TEDxSelfDesignHigh coming May 1st!

TEDxSelfDesign High Co-Inspiring the Future

Attention people who plan to live in the future:
SATURDAY, MAY 1st is a very important day for YOU! Please direct yourself to the SelfDesign youtube station or the SelfDesign High Commons, upstairs of the Legion at 402 Victoria Street in Nelson, to attend the first ever TEDxSelfDesign High – Co-Inspiring the Future!  This event, an offshoot of the famous TED.com talks, has been inspired and organized and will be hosted by the youth of SelfDesign High.
Join us for the day to hear truly sensational speakers chosen to present on our theme of: Who inspires us to create a better world, and how can we create this together?
Although TEDx SelfDesign High may very well be the smallest TEDx event yet to happen, we are working hard to make this one of the best, most inspirational events yet. People of all ages, of all professions and of all walks of life are coming together to present their ideas and ideals about the future. Presentations range from two minutes to eighteen minutes. Some will be more performance based, some more of a speech and some that are in a classification all of their own.
Working with TEDx Talks has provided SelfDesign High with all the information needed to have this event live up to TED Talks high level of engagement and inspiration (the high ambition level) and (also to further realize) is a great example that all learning IS connected.

Please join us to discover leading edge, local thinkers in numerous fields, and realize how this relates to your life and work. “For many attendees, the result is: delicious, unexpected connections; extraordinary insights ; powerful inspiration.” – TED

Interested in attending our TEDx event?
There are a limited number of audience seats available and our goal is to have a mix of youth to elders, and a diversity of backgrounds. If you wish to attend please send an email to: yuminitiative@gmail.com and tell us who you are and why you wish to attend. We will get back to you with details.

Also check-out our TEDx website: http://sites.google.com/site/tedxselfdesignhigh/home

If you cannot attend in person you can join by watching our live stream. Details will be on the web site.

I’m constantly looking at the new and innovative ways that other schools, colleges, universities and companies use Moodle. Over the coming months you will no doubt see some of these ideas start to appear here at SelfDesign High. In my online travels I read the blog of Tomas Lazic. Tomas is the Education Researcher at Moodle HQ in Perth, Australia. His job is to smooth the waters between the programmers and the educators. Obviously he’s an ideal guy to keep an eye on as he has a foot in both camps; the educators and the geeks. Anyways, getting back to the point of this posting; on his blog http://tomazlasic.net/ I found a great intorduction to Moodle using a format I’ve not seen before…’prezi.’ Have a play and see what you think…you might learn something about Moodle at the same time. :) Just click on the play arrow and click again to move to the next view, and so on.
